Deodar House sits at 6,000 feet on the old planters' road above Coonoor, ringed by deodar cedars and working tea gardens. Built in 1911 as an estate manager's residence, it keeps its Burma-teak floors, cast-iron fireplaces and a verandah that runs the length of the house and looks clear across the valley to the Dolphin's Nose ridge.
Five rooms only. Meals are home-cooked and taken together unless you'd rather not; the kitchen works around whatever came up from the Coonoor market that morning. Sim's Park is a ten-minute walk downhill, the tea estates start at the gate, and Ooty is forty minutes by road or an hour on the toy train from Coonoor station.
